Inauguration of 2nd phase of
Pan-African e-Network Project by EAM

The second phase of the Pan-African e-Network Project would be
inaugurated by External Affairs Minister Shri S.M. Krishna, at TCIL
Bhawan, New Delhi, on Monday 16 August 2010.
The first phase of the Project, covering 11 countries, was
inaugurated by EAM on 26 February 2009.
The second phase would cover another twelve countries, which are -
Botswana, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Libya,
Malawi, Mozambique, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia. During the inauguration
EAM would hold online interactions with high level dignitaries from
each of the twelve countries in question.
Under the Pan African e-Network Project India is helping in setting
up a fibre-optic network to provide satellite connectivity, tele-medicine
and tele-education to all 53 nations of Africa. M/s. TCIL, a
Government of India undertaking, is implementing the project on
behalf of Government of India. 47 countries have already joined the
Project.
Under the Project, Telemedicine patient end locations have already
been set up in 11 Indian Super Specialty Hospitals. These have been
connected to 33 Patient-End Hospitals in African countries. Regular
Tele-medicine Consultations have already started in some of the
African countries.
Tele-Education teaching centres have also been set-up in 5 Indian
Universities (Amity Noida; IGNOU New Delhi; BITS, Pilani; University
of Delhi; University of Madras). 34 Learning Centers (LCs) have
already been set up in African countries.
Tele-Education learning centres have been set-up in 3 Regional
Leading University Centres in Africa (Kwame and Nkrumah University
of Science and Technology, Ghana; Makerere University, Uganda; &
Yaounde University, Cameroon).
More than 1700 students from several African countries have already
registered with Indian universities and they are being imparted
Tele-education by Indian universities.
30 VVIP nodes have been set up in African countries (for
video-conferencing and Voice over IP among the Heads of States)
